MAON

Maon is a small, cooperative, agricultural moshav conducted on a high religious level. In addition to working in the joint agricultural ventures, some residents work in private professions or study in kolel.

First established in 1981 within the Nahal framework, a group from Bnei Akiva fell in love with this special desert community and made it their home in 1982. Today 50 families live here, the majority of whom are native born Israelis.

As an agricultural cooperative, Maon offers work to its members in several different areas including orchards, chicken coops, dairy production and others. There are also members who choose to work in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Beersheva and small neighboring communities in education, finance, engineering and other fields.

South of Jerusalem and Kiryat Arba, Maon is on the edge of the desert with the magical nature landscapes that involves.

Since the moshav is small, all the children know one another, making for a warm, supportive environment in the educational settings. The youngest children are cared for in quality day care centers. The kindergarteners are divided into pre-kindergarten and kindergarten groups by age. Elementary school children travel to neighboring Sussia, just 5 minutes away, all the way through junior high. High school teens mostly study in Sussia or Kiryat Arba but an Ulpana is planned in the near future in the community itself.

Community life is of utmost importance. A wide variety of activities are provided including sports, art, creative writing, storytelling, cooking and many others. A Talmud Torah is offered after school with separate groups for boys and girls from kindergarten through the eighth grade. Bnei Akiva holds activities twice weekly.

Among the public facilities in Maon are a synagogue, evening kolel, mikve, gym, library, vegetable market, Leumit Kupat Cholim and children's development center. A grocery store is located in Sussia.

Maon is in the Southern Hevron Hills Region just south of Kiryat Arba. It is a 45 minute drive from Jerusalem, 30 minutes from Beersheva and just 20 minutes from Arad. The 38 bus line from Netanya passes by 7 times a day.
